“My Safe Families Journey”

ShardayIn 2019, shortly after losing my job, I found myself three months behind in rent and facing eviction. My two year old son, Joseph and I were going to be put out on the streets very soon. The stress was too much for me to handle, and at my lowest of lows I relapsed on drugs. I could no longer take care of my son on my own. I needed help, and I needed it fast. By the grace of God, Safe Families for Children reached out to me and was able to intervene when I had lost hope and confidence in my ability to be a good mother.

Instead of having Joseph live on the streets, I made the decision to have him live with a host family while I cleaned my life up and bettered myself. After a period of homelessness, I found myself pregnant again with a little baby girl. During this time, my Safe Families Coach helped me enter the women’s home at Care Center Ministries. While my son Joseph was with a host family, I was able to focus on my one-on-one relationship with God, stay clean and sober, and have a healthy pregnancy and delivery.

After leaving the women’s home with my new baby girl, Safe Families walked with me on my journey to obtain a very nice two-bedroom apartment, a daycare for the children, and a permanent, full time job with benefits. Now, Joseph, Jocelyn (his new baby sister) and I are all living under one roof as one, happy family! Joseph has his own big boy room and he loves playing with his baby sister all the time!

I recently received my acceptance letter from Texas A&M University – Commerce to go back to school and finish my Bachelors degree. I start school in January 2021. I know I have God on my side and the support of Safe Families to give me the confidence to know that I can finish my degree, work, and raise my children!

I also celebrated a year of sobriety on November 8, 2020. I would like to offer hope and encouragement to any single mothers who might not believe it is possible to turn their lives around. I am living proof that it is possible. I went from a homeless, drug addict to taking care of my children in our own home, going back to school, and celebrating a year of sobriety. I would definitely recommend Safe Families for Children to anyone who needs help keeping their family together. Thank you for saving mine!
